The scenario is here.
The Turanians peppered the Rudraige's surprised comrades with a hail of javelins, forcing them to couch down behind their shields. Gawayn returned some effective fire, but both the Brythunian Lord and Cadmendin were forced back to the corner of the headman's stone house, a tactical withdrawal admittedly as it gave them the occasion to hold down the mercenaries there. It did however give the Hyperborean Emissary the opportunity to seek cover behind a wall of fiercely loyal Turanian spearmen.
Chimène had snuck round to the headman's door, where she had successfully picked the lock, killed the guard, and rescued the hostage. Covered by Gawayn, who had looted a Bossonian bow, Chimène merged back into the darkness, preparing to slide through the shadows to save the second hostage, the headman's little girl. Two of the three Flesh Eaters emerged, however, badly wounding Gawayn who had already suffered from a new volley of Turanian javelins, and to make matters worse, two mercenaries charged into the fray, blocking all hope of escape [due to Blocker, ndlr].
Thankfully, Rudraige had recovered, and after Cadmendin had cleared his way, the Brythunian could charge into the fray. The mercenaries slain, Gawayn could limp away with the first hostage in tow. Chimène decided to come out into the open, looting a treasure chest in which she found a battle-axe, that promptly split a Turanian skull.
The Hyperboreans were now under great pressure, as Cadmendin smashed into the wall of Turanian infantry, cutting down three of the four defenders as he tried to carve his way to the Emissary. Chimène, the lithe warrior-nun of Mitra, had picked up the battle-axe, thrown it and narrowly missed the fourth Turanian, run back to Rudraige and hacked down one of the Flesh Eaters.
This left Rudraige able to run over to the house where the second hostage was being kept, smash down the door [with Wall Breaker, ndlr] and slay the surprised Turanian guard who stood no chance.
Cadmendin was finally face to face with the Hyperborean Emissary, but his powerful blow went wild [the Emissary's Jinx ability gives the Heroes a really hard time, ndlr].
At this point in time, a returning patrol brought a new host of Turanian soldiers flooding into the village. The Emissary threw spells at Cadmendin, and withdrew into the protective cover of this phalanx. The heroes were winded, and by the time they recovered, yet more Turanian spearmen had flooded in to protect the Hyperborean witch. Chimène crossed the village, grabbed the battleaxe and downed another Turanian; Cadmendin moving forward picked up the axe and crashed into the phalanx, using his circular strike to deadly effect; in the meantime, Rudraige crashed through the window of the log house, hacked his way through scouts, and brought low two more Turanian spearmen. There were however too many, and more on the way.
The Hyperboreans and Turanians reeling from this violent assault, the heroes were able to escape, taking the second hostage with them. The Emissary still alive, the village will be burnt to the ground and the surviving inhabitants executed to serve as an example; nonetheless, the efforts made by the Brythunian Lord and the Warriors of Mitra to save as many as possible, with little care for their own fate, will no doubt kindle a flame of hope in the Northlands.
An amazing game, with some absolutely epic moments.
The four heroes present all gain +2 well-deserved XP, for having saved both hostages.
Rudraige receives 2 wounds, Cadmendin 1 wound (and even more dents in his armour, he truly is blessed by Mitra...), it turns out that Gawayn is not so badly hurt after all (1 wound), and the lithe Chimène is unharmed.
Gawayn keeps both the Bossonian bow he picked up, and his trusty Zingaran one.
