Background :

The world of animals and of plants is not that of Man.  The wolf devours the doe, but does not consider himself her master.  Ants and fungi clean the corpse; they show no compassion, but show no contempt, treat not the animal as a victim.  The eagle soars, but in so doing merely seeks to better see the earth that feeds it.  The seed borne on the wind is not seeking to escaping its genitors, but creating a new home for future generations.

It is this endless harmony, that of the Earth Mother and the Earth Father, that is the source of all magic.  All those who seek to take this pure thing and corrupt it, defile it, are my enemies.  With the aid of the Earth Mother and the Earth Father, I will track them and send them back to the clay in which they were ill-modelled by the hand of man.

The story of Nuala is a rare one, binding as it does three peoples in a tale of forgiveness and tolerance, and it is said that the Gods blessed such a rare display of compassion.  After a raid over the border, a Nemedian captain saved a baby from the flames in which her parents had perished, though his comrades urged him to let the Aquilonian brat burn.  Soldierly work still to be done, he left the girl to an Aquilonian woman in a neighbouring village, which the random horrors of war had spared.

Through the ensuing bloodshed, he did not forget the baby, and on the way home, took a detour to recover her.  Aquilonian pursuers came to the village, but the woman hid her Nemedian enemy.  By the time the Aquilonians left, Nuala had once more a father and a mother.  The other villagers were suspicious, and it became obvious that the family must flee.  They left, with almost nothing to their name, and crossed the border into Argos.

Nearly dead with hunger and thirst, they came upon an Argive village, which offered them food and shelter, and finally a home.

The village was blessed from then on with bumper crops, and even in the deadly heart of the worst winters, the wolves stayed far away.  Children were always born healthy, and illness and even old age was stayed.  Abundant offerings were made to Mitra, but everyone in the village knew that this extraordinary blessing came from Nuala.

The girl has grown into a powerful druid, inextricably tied to the invisible forces that flow through all things living.  Nuala knows the hidden potentials of every animal and every plant; but she can also feel their agony when the corruption caused by black magic taints them.

Today, her Argive home is far off though not forgotten, as the magician relentlessly tracks all those who would corrupt the gift that is the natural world.  She has looked into the face of mindless horror, stood tall before demons, and brought low many a monster with flashing steel.

Her name is legend, but Nuala aspires not to fame, or leadership.  She is a faithful ally to all those who share her hatred of evil, and has friends amongst the Fellowship of Light in the South just as she does amongst the Watch in the North.

Campaign History :

Following the trail of blood left by Aetulla to the Temple of Ibis, Nuala realises that the necromancer is, for unknown reasons, after the Priestess of Ibis. Stepping in, she receives unexpected help from two adventurers, Brude and Ethelglyth, whom she quickly fathoms are thieves.  In return for their help in protecting the Priestess, Nuala aids them in stealing the sacred treasure of the temple - a book of great knowledge - reasoning that it is better not to leave such power in Aetulla's hands.

Despite initially shaky foundations for an alliance, Nuala gains the trust of Ethelglyth when her giant wolf sacrifices itself to save the young Brythunian.  During the raid on Aetulla's camp in the Kothian Desert, the magician is in turn saved by Brude, who throws himself into the fray to protect her, sustaining great hurt in the doing.  In turn, her Eel Skin spell allows him to get to safety.

Although she takes no part in the fighting, it is Nuala's plan that leads to the fall of Aetulla in the ruins of Ula Aethel, but accidentally causes the release of the serpent-demon Stthag, which will have dreadful consequences in Koth.
