Background :
- It is my geis to face my enemies, at the head of an army, or alone
Beowa was one of the sons of a once-powerful Vanir clan, betrayed by its rivals and massacred. Beowa and a handful of survivors managed to flee in a fishing boat. Barely recovered from his wounds, the young man climbed the summit of a lofty peak of the Eiglophian Mountains, and there took a solemn and binding oath. Calling on the gods to bear witness, he vowed to return to Vanir in ten years time and face those who had slaughtered his family, either at the head of an army, or if need be, alone.
His quest for revenge brought Beowa into the Northlands, where the most desperate men in all Hyboria live. An excellent sword-arm, and intelligence and bravery, all tinged with desperation and coloured by hate, have allowed Beowa to carve out a small base of power at the junction of Brythunia, Zamora and Turan. Beowa was one of few men who would raid even into Hyperborea itself and knew how to encourage others to follow him, and that was temerity that his neighbours prized. When they were not paying him, he and his band, which now numbers forty men and women, happily turned to banditry, sometimes against their former employers.
Although initially driven by his thirst for revenge and fear of failure, Beowa became aware that it was transforming him, slowly making him unfit to bear his family's heritage. Recently he has begun to alter his strategy - which has forced him to violently part ways with more than one lieutenant - and focus on building up something that is more than a mere warband, and being more selective on what they are paid to do. It is a long and difficult task that is teaching him a different way to lead men. He is also now prepared to fail, as long as he can face his enemies, axe in hand, when his geis comes to term.
