The Soothsayer of Myrmatrea is a young woman drawn from among a small number of families, although at any one time, there are in fact several oracles at work or in training.
Girls with freckled or birthmarked skin are prized, as they are considered to have been touched by the divine upon birth. They are trained throughout their childhood to open their hearts to the gods and let their raw power flow through them, for the Soothsayer of Myrmatrea has the reputation of being a true oracle, one open to no interpretation.
One who seeks an answer comes before the oracle, and sacrifices a white sheep to the heavens and a black goat to the underworld. If the omen is favorable, heavenly gods will gather and blinding yellow or white light will flow through the Soothsayer, as if through her very veins and across her skin. If the omen is unfavorable, dark gods are summoned in greater numbers and her veins and skin are as if running with black ink, and she will cry tears of black blood. The bands of coloured cloth in which they are wrapped, the only garments they tolerate during the ritual, are meant to protect their bodies from harm, although the effort remains dangerous.
This exposure to direct divine intervention, gives the priestess an insight into the workings of magic, and many gradually learn to master the arts of sorcery. Some even whisper that certain gifted Soothsayers are actually able to manipulate the answer given by the gods, in return for rich gifts for her temple.
That may be, but Doralys has faithfully served the gods' truth for several years. Like all her colleagues, she is on occasion sent by her temple as an emissary or to accomplish a particular mission.
