Background :

No longer were the eyes in the worn face expressionless. Dark and meditative, they were alive with intelligence. The head was narrow and well-formed, with a high splendid forehead. The whole build of the man was aristocratic, evident no less in his tall slender frame than in his small trim feet and hands. His first words were strange and startling.

Whilst Pelias claims that it his arch-enemy, Tsotha-lanti, was born of union between a Zamoran that slept too near an ancient ruin, and a demon that haunted it, many think he speaks of his own conception.

What little can be gleaned about his early life, is that he lived in Corinthia, and unearthed dark secrets in its libraries several hundred years ago.  He is also a philosopher of great renown, and his own literature is on the bookshelf of any studied noble.

Whilst Pelias, like all powerful magicians, dabbles in politics and power, he is more morally ambiguous than most.  He seems to seek power more as a shield against his enemies than as a means to an end, and has on several occasions simply disappeared from the arcanes of Hyborian civilisation, abandoning a coveted role to whomever first seizes it.  This same ambiguity explains that he can both dabble in necromantic magic, and write books on ethics whose self-proclaimed, and well achieved, goal is to improve the lot of man.

He is, in any case, a legend in his own lifetime; he has been variously accredited with discovering the transmutation of lead into gold, killing young children and raising from the dead to mine pits of sulphur, finding a cure for the plague of -82, and conspiring with demons to annihilate various capital cities.
