Older than the Cataclysm dwelt, in the south of the Thurian Continent, a pre-human civilisation lost even to legend.

When, around the year -3800, the Lemurians in the East overthrow their slave-masters, these masters flee westwards, where they encounter, and defeat, the ancient civilisation of the Thurian south, founding the Stygian Empire and making Gods of their downtrodden foe.  The religion of Set is born.

Certain Nemedian scholars have surmised that, given the nature of Stygian religion, the southern Thurian civilisation must surely have been built by anthropomorphic creatures.  It is whispered that some have dared to travel to its ruins, and have encountered représentatives of these most ancient races.

It turns out that they are right.  Serpent-men were the ruling caste of this old race, of which the giant slithering serpents of Stygia are but debased memories.  Hidden in the darkest recesses of the forgotten south, the Serpent-Men plot death to all Man; they have found allies amongst the most power-crazed of the Stygian sorceror-priests.

It is the lords of this people that became the Gods of Stygia, under the collective name of Set.    Their snake-necks bore a head of cold classic beauty, on which no emotion was painted, be it weakness or mercy, or cruelty or kindness.  Their voice rang like the golden chimes of Khitai temples, in a tongue that is long forgotten yet strangely comprehensible to Man.

It is said that the scaled people see what escapes the human eye : when a human looks upon the fleshly body, a serpent-man sees the naked soul.
