Ceorls are Hyborian freemen who pledge lifelong military service on foot to a noble, in return for a modest plot of land.  They are raised every third year, and their plot becomes hereditary after their third campaign, which explains their nickname of Thricemen.

The custom is originally Brythunian, but has proven popular in northern Hyboria, spreading to both Nemedia and Aquilonia and becoming the dominant form of landholding in the Border Kingdoms.  Ceorls are sometimes ex-soldiers of a royal army, sometimes simple peasants who learn the art of warfare directly on the battlefield.
